How does Google AdSense work?

How do we get paid off by Google AdSense? By grabbing more traffic or by adding more stuff to our webpage? I got declined both of the times even I had epic content and was very richly populated.  :-\

Secondly am I allowed to add goggle advertisements without getting approved by Google AdSense? Will my website get indexed in Google then?

You can edit previous post and add your content instead of making new post to increase post count..  :) :)
