What is PHP_EOL constant and when to use it?

Hi,

I have seen this PHP_EOL used in few script and that doesn't make sense to me, what is this exactly for ?

This explanation I got from php.net

PHP_EOL (string)
    The correct 'End Of Line' symbol for this platform. Available since PHP 4.3.10 and PHP 5.0.2

And that is not clear to me..
