i always suggest you to use Adobe Illustrator CS5 its easy and you can design a professional logo if you use illustrator
-
Photoshop is clearly the best however this is only if you have the money. However if you're like me and can't afford it then GIMP is the best

There is no doubt that illustrator is the best software for designing logo's mainly due to the following reasons:
1. It makes vector graphics. Vector graphics can be scaled without any loss of quality whatsoever. Meaning that you dont see any jagged edges. Thats not true with photoshop where the graphics are pixel based.
2. Illustrator has a ton of tools designed just for logos and other illustrations. PS is mainly for image editing.
3. You might consider corel draw as a option but in my mind, there is no serious competition to illustrator!
Hope that helps,
:)

There is always inkscape for vector images and gimp for rasture

Illustrator AND photoshop in my workflow... one completes the other :D

I'd always suggest and go for Photohop since it's easy and portable to internet. :)
